Abstract
:
The study aims to reveal the relationship between parenting styles and self-esteem of students with learning disabilities at primary grades in Jeddah. The study sample consisted of (150) third graders who are enrolled in learning disabilities program in Jeddah's public schools. The researcher used the descriptive method. To achieve the objectives of the research, the researcher used the Parental Rearing Scale (Al Hawarneh, 2005) and a version of Self – Esteem Scale (Hare,1975) translated by Al Dhaidan in (2003). The results of the study show that the most common parenting style practiced by parents as perceived by students with learning disabilities is (authoritarianism – Neglect), while the least style practiced is (democratic – overprotection). Furthermore, the highest degree of self-esteem is found to be (family self-esteem), while the lowest degree of self-esteem is (school self-esteem). In addition, there is no statistically significant correlation between the total score of parenting styles and all the dimensions of self-esteem based on gender differences, except for the family self-esteem for parenting styles of mothers, where there is a correlative relationship with a negative statistical significance. Finally, there are significant differences between the sample responses in the parenting styles in relation to the variable (parenting style based on gender). The study concludes with possible recommendations which include, raising awareness among parents on self-esteem through neighborhood centers and family charities organizations. Another important recommendation is to support students with low self-esteem by providing them with counseling services. Lastly, it is highly recommended to offer training courses to teachers of general education and teachers of learning disabilities to help them acquire necessary skills to deal with students with learning disabilities and their families.
