:
Introduction: The nutritional problems were increasing in King of Saudi Arabia (KSA), the nutrition professionals (NP) should be qualified to play an important role to overcome these problems. Objectives: The aim of this study was to explore the competencies required for the nutrition professionals in KSA for performing their roles effectively. Methods: It used two scientific research design; qualitative and quantitative. In the qualitative phase, a focus group discussion from seven academic professionals participated and twenty-five semi- structured interviews of nutrition professional’s female were conducted, transcribed and analyzed using the deductive approach for emerging themes. In the following quantitative phase, an electronic survey was designed based on the results of the qualitative phase, it analyzed by SPSS for confirmation of required competencies. Results: twenty-eight competency elements in thirteen competency areas emerged in the qualitative research. Twenty-seven matching to the competency Building Blocks for Effective Public Health Nutrition Practice, and a new element which is “Learning English Language” was emerged as extremely needed for the Nutrition Professionals (NP) in the KSA to confirm the quantitative phase its important with mean value above of 7. The results also showed two new competency areas were “job classification and training”. Discussion: Total of nine hundred and twenty-nine (n=929) of NP responded to the survey. They confirmed that all twenty-eight competencies found in thirteen competency areas were considered extermely nessary for the NP practice In addition to two new areas were played the important role for the NP and affect their competencies. Conclusions: The study was able to explore the competencies required for effective nutrition professionals practice in KSA.
