Dams in Saudi Arabia are an essential construction for flashflood protection and as artificial lakes for saving rainfall water. Wadi Bat-Han dam, Al Madinah Al Munawarah, is a diversion earth dam constructed to protected the northern urban area of Wadi Bat-Han from flashflood which including the holy mosque in Al Madinah Al Munawarah. A rising in the groundwater have been reported in the northern area of the dam construction, expecting leakage from or underneath the dam body. Geophysical investigations have been carried out on and around Wadi Bat-Han dam for subsurface and groundwater leakage imaging. A total of 9 electrical resistivity tomography sections, with different electrodes spacing, are carried out along and across the dam body, and in the upstream and downstream using dipole-dipole array. The dam’s in-fill sediments are clearly imaged using small electrodes spacing, while the deeper subsurface structures are imaged using 10 m electrodes spacing down to more than 120 m depth. Two seismic profiles were conducted on the dam body and on the upstream. The study shows the presence of three distinguishable subsurface layers, weathered, fractured and fresh basalt, in addition to the dam in-fill sediments. The layers are quite variable in depths and thicknesses along the sections as well as their sequence relative to each other. The resistivity results illustrate the saturation zones and the seismic results distinguish the layering, fractures and the structure. Both results in electrical resistivity tomography and seismic confirm each other. This study confirms that there is no water leakage from the fractured rock or seepage from the dam in-fill sediments at the time of the study. |
