Abstract
:
The effect of lithologic heterogeneity of the Tertiaryl and Quaternary rocks of the Nile Delta of Egypt on the velocity distributi10n is studied through the relation between root mean square velocity and aver age velocity. Such velocities of a number of wells and a number of seJsmlc lines are calculated and plotted to define the drift between them. The produced discrepancy between the root mean square velocity and averag velocity proved to be a measure for the heterogeneity between the sands. lays and shales of the considered sequence. as shown from the vel city heterogeneity maps. Average velocity gradient maps for the tops of El-Wastani, Ka EISheikh and Abu Madi (Pliocene). Qawasim and Sidi Salem (Miocene and Qantara (Oligocene) Formations are constructed. The velocity vari tion encountered in EI-Wastani, Kafr EI-Sheikh. Abu Madi and Qawasim l Formations is nearly the same. This may reflect consistent conditions of sedimentation of these units . Root mean square velocity profiling is c~rried out. in which seven of these profile s (mostly pass through the drilled wells) are chosen for illustration in this work. These profiles reveal the subdivision of the evalu ated section into a number oftears (two or three orfour) expre ssing the accompanying changes in the stratigraphy of the shallowsect·on . The drift between time-depth curves derived from velocity analysi and those derived from well data are also calculated and plotted for the' ells: Kafr EI-Sheikh-1. Sidi Salem-I. Oawasim-I , North Bilqas-I and Abadi yaI. Added. the vertical drift of these wells are followed laterally through time deviation maps of the six fore-mentioned rock units. These time deVi~tions can be used for correcting the root meart square velocities of the st cked sections in the areas of no available velocity measurements needed f r determining the optimum seismic velocities.
